Madi Shove Earns All-America, All-Region Honors

May  30, 2011: Madi Shove capped off the 2011 season with Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Third Team All-American selection. She was also selected IWLCA First Team All-West Region. Shove has been a standout player for the Athenas since day one. Madi followed her stellar freshman year with an even more remarkable second season. Shove was second on the team in goals this season with 73 which ranks her second all-time in program history for goals in a single season- just one goal shy of Sarah Dick's mark of 74. Shove, a First Team All-SCIAC selection, was a dominant force in the midfield contributing at both ends with ground balls, draw controls and leading the team in caused turnovers. Shove finished the season nationally ranked 14th in the nation for goals per game and helped the Athenas gain the rank of sixth nationally in scoring offense. Shove was instrumental in the Athenas' success in 2011, including a #1 Regional ranking as well as well as winning a second SCIAC Championship. The Athenas fell to eventual National Champion Gettysburg College in the second round of NCAA competition in their third trip to the Sweet 16.

FROM J.LEE:
Congrats to everyone who attended the 2010 tryouts yesterday at Menlo-Atherton HS.  Each one of you should be proud to have participated in one of the most competitive tryouts we have had in recent years.

There were 79 candidates from 21 different HS Varsity programs who registered for tryouts. On Sunday at Menlo-Atherton High School, in Atherton, there were 58 players who checked in, and played hard for the entire tryout process. The roster and alternates for Nor Cal WDNT Team includes players from 14 different HS programs, and one player from a HS that does not have lacrosse! There are 10 juniors, 6 sophomores and 4 frosh named to the team, (plus a junior and sophomore who are waiting in the wings as alternates, should the occasion arise for them to make the trip to WDNT). It is a great, strong, roster of players who will unquestionably perform well at WDNT. With Amy Harms and Jen Gray as their coaches, they will rise to the occasion of each and every challenge they face in their opponents. We wish them all the best as Team “NorCal 1” at WDNT.

Here’s the good news. The team has a bunch of solid, excellent players on the roster! The bad news: There are unfortunately some very talented players who will be left behind this year. We truly have the talent now in Nor Cal that we could field and send TWO team s that would represent Nor Cal at WDNT. Based on what was very apparent in the tryouts yesterday, we had 40 players, easily. We should know very soon if we had enough coach membership registrations completed by April 1, 2010 (50 total needed to get a second team) to allow us to select 40 girls from Nor Cal NEXT spring for WDNT. If we are reasonably close to the 50 membership count, we will petition US Lacrosse to be granted the second team. We are ready. Stay tuned and cross your fingers. We are hopeful that in 2011 we will have Nor Cal 1 and Nor Cal 2 teams. In the meantime, Nor Cal’s one team this year will help set the tone and pave the way for further Nor Cal teams of the future. GO NOR CAL!
